Erhard Helbig

Erhard Helbig (born September 17, 1914 in Gröba ; † January 29, 2007 in Berlin ) was a German political officer of the National People's Army (NVA) and the German People's Police (DVP). He was major general and head of the political administration of the Ministry of the Interior of the GDR .

Life

Helbig was a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) during the Weimar Republic . During the Second World War he was drafted into the armed forces for military service.

After the war he joined the SED and became a member of the Barracked People's Police (KVP). In 1956 he went to the newly founded National People's Army as a political officer. From January 1, 1958 to December 31, 1959, he was Colonel Deputy Chief of Military District III of the NVA and Head of Political Administration (successor to Rudolf Neitsch). He then acted as deputy head of the political administration of the border troops of the NVA and the main political administration of the NVA .

In 1965 he was appointed as the successor to Willi Knöpke head of the political administration of the Ministry of the Interior and by decision of the Council of Ministers of the GDR on June 30, 1965 as major general. He held this position until 1971. He was given early retirement and lived as a veteran in Neuenhagen near Berlin .

Helbig last lived in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg and was a member of the Initiative Group for the Protection of Social Rights (ISOR). He died at the age of 92 and was buried in the Neuenhagen forest cemetery.
