Erhard Kallweit (born May 4, 1936 in Neu Lappienen , East Prussia ) is a German agricultural scientist; He was a professor for animal breeding and product science at the University of Göttingen .

Live and act

The war events brought him to Lower Saxony when he was nine years old, where he is still at home today. After an agricultural apprenticeship in the Rotenburg and Verden / Aller districts and studying agriculture at the University of Göttingen, he passed the diploma examination there in 1962. As an employee of Fritz Haring and under the supervision of Joachim Less , he wrote a dissertation at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics on the subject: "Investigations into the relationships between body composition and meat quality in growing pigs".

Those with the doctorate to Dr.sc.agr. The basis for his scientific commitment laid in 1964 was first deepened by his work as a Kellogg scholarship holder in Madison at the University of Wisconsin , USA, in 1964/65. Subsequently, Max Witt was able to win him over to the then Max Planck Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Nutrition Mariensee, where he carried out a wide range of work on the carcass and meat quality of farm animals.

Kallweit completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen in 1972 and was appointed associate professor in 1975. In 1978 he was a substitute professor at the local institute for animal breeding and domestic animal genetics. He was deputy head of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Behavior Mariensee, which was renamed in 1974, and a member of the Senate of the newly superordinate Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL). In 1977 he was appointed Scientific Director. The scientific and administrative tasks performed by Kallweit, e.g. B. the leadership of the working groups sheep and pig production, in vivo analysis of biological systems, process quality, have contributed significantly to the reputation of the institute and laid solid foundations for a successful continuation of the areas of responsibility.

Kallweit has always remained committed to the endeavors expressed in this to work out the basis for the economic production of high-quality products for consumers. Always at the forefront of scientific developments, he plays a decisive role in evaluating, improving and securing meat quality in its many different facets. This area was therefore also the subject of his habilitation thesis "Relationships between fattening and slaughter performance and characteristics of the meat quality in different animal species". There the results of detailed comparative studies are presented.

Research engagements

Cross-institutional and international cooperation has always been a key feature of Kallweit's scientific commitment. His long-term collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Endocrinology in Hanover and its director, Peter Jungblut, should be mentioned as a particularly effective example. He was also able to demonstrate his love for horses in Mariensee with scientific studies on problems related to training and competition stress and very successfully link it to training management for sport horses.

voluntary work

The results of his scientific work are documented in many relevant publications in German and international literature as well as in various book chapters. Particularly noteworthy here is the book “Quality of Animal Food”, published in 1988 together with other authors. Due to his scientific commitment, the jubilee was active in a number of important committees that deal with questions of quality production of meat as well as its processing and marketing. So he was z. B. from 1982 to 1999 chairman of the working committee "meat production" of the German Society for Zuchtungskunde and since 1989 member of a CMA working group for the development of a criteria catalog for "quality meat". As a member of the committee for performance testing and breeding value estimation in pigs (ALZ) he kept in contact with breeding practice. His many years of work in the editorial board of the "Archive for Animal Breeding" should also be mentioned.
