Eric Cesar Chavez (born December 7, 1977 in Los Angeles , California ) is a retired American baseball player on the position of third baseman . His last club in Major League Baseball were the Arizona Diamondbacks . From 2001 to 2006 he won the Gold Glove six times in a row as the best defensive player in his position. In addition, he was named Silver Slugger (best offensive player) in 2002. At the beginning of November 2010 the A's announced that they would not take up an option to extend the contract. This ended Chavez's 13-year career with the Athletics. Only Rickey Henderson was longer with this club, namely 14 years. He then moved to the New York Yankees in 2011 , where he played for two years and went to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013. On June 8, 2014, he ended his career in the MLB after 16 years.

Chavez made his debut in the final stages of the 1998 season. He became an important part of the newly built team in Oakland, which reached the play-offs every year from 2000 to 2003 . While the other top players left the A's after the 2004 season, Chavez stayed and signed a six-year contract worth $ 66 million. Up until the 2007 season he had about 150 missions almost every season, but problems with his shoulder have since forced him to undergo several surgeries and injury breaks. In 2008, Chavez only played 23 games, in 2009 only 9. In his senior year at the Athletics, he suffered an injury at the end of May that ended his season after just 33 games.
