Eric Wyndham White

Sir Eric Henry Wyndham White , KCMG (alternative spelling: Eric Wyndham-White ; born January 26, 1913 ; † January 27, 1980 in France ) was a British lawyer and diplomat , who was first Executive Secretary between 1948 and 1965 and then from 1965 until 1968 was the first General Director of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade GATT.

Life

Wyndham White graduated after attending the Westminster City School to study law at the University of London , and was after his graduation with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and his legal admission to the Bar ( Inns of Court ) from Middle Temple first active as a barrister . After a subsequent activity from 1938 to 1939 as a lecturer (Assistant Lecturer) at the London School of Economics (LSE), he was from 1939 to 1941 employees in the Ministry of Economic Warfare ( Minister of Economic Warfare ) . In 1942 he switched to the foreign service and was first secretary at the embassy in the USA from 1942 to 1945 and then at the embassy in France after the end of the Second World War in 1946 . Shortly thereafter, he became assistant to the European Director of the United Nations Emergency Relief and Reconstruction Administration UNRRA ( United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration ) .

After that was Wyndham White of 1946-1948 representative United Nations in world trade round , which in the 30 October 1947 Geneva to conclude the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) had led. He then acted as general secretary of the Economic Emergency Committee for Europe, before becoming its first executive secretary after the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade GATT came into force on January 1, 1948. On March 23, 1965, he finally took over the newly created post as the first General Director of GATT by Olivier Long on May 6, 1968. After leaving this position, he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) and from now on has the suffix "Sir".

Wyndham White, who most recently worked in the private sector, such as for the offshore financial group Investors Overseas Services (IOS) headed by Bernard Cornfeld , died of a heart attack while swimming.
