Erich Ahlers

Erich Ahlers (born September 3, 1909 in Rastede ; † April 2, 2004 in Rastede) was a German horticultural director in Bremen .

biography

Ahlers learned a trade as a gardener in the palace gardening shop in Rastede. He then studied landscape architecture in Berlin . He then worked in various locations as a planner, including in the Bremen horticultural department . In Poznan he worked as a freelance garden architect and worked together with Werner Lendholt . During the Second World War he served a. a. from 1941 to 1943 in the Africa Corps and was taken prisoner by the United States in 1943. In 1946 he returned to Rastede.

In 1947 the Senate appointed him to succeed Johann Berg as horticultural director and head of the cemetery and horticultural office in Bremen (now Stadtgrün Bremen ). First of all, the devastated green spaces in Bremen had to be put in order again using the simplest means; this included above all the Bremen ramparts . The Hohentorsgarten was created in the new town . The 46 hectare Rhododendron Park Bremen , which was laid out in 1933, was enlarged according to plans by him and the garden architect Johann Berg.

The communal cemeteries were renovated and expanded. The Osterholz cemetery could be expanded with the construction of the second, about 30 hectare section, from 1948, with his predecessor Paul Freye participating. In 1956, the Huckelriede cemetery in Huckelriede on the Werderhöhe was established with a size of 27.1 hectares as a park and lawn cemetery with a chapel and the crematorium . The anonymous burial ground for urns in the Riensberg cemetery was created in 1974 based on his design .

The tidal water , Werdersee with the two-kilometer-long Kleiner Weser was created from 1953 to 1960 and at the same time the gardens were laid out with a bathing beach, Weser promenades, bridge and enlarged allotment gardens.

Ahlers retired in 1974, and was succeeded by Chief Horticultural Director Berndt Andreas. Ahlers then lived in Rastede again.

He was married to Hildegard Ahlers and had two sons and a daughter. His grandson is the Berlin actor Christian Ahlers .
