Erich Keller (born July 21, 1918 in Augsburg ; † September 8, 2010 ) was a German musician, composer and conductor.

biography

Erich Keller began playing the violin as a child and studied music at the Augsburg Conservatory after graduating from high school. From 1938 to 1942 he studied violin with Wilhelm Stross at the Academy of Music in Munich and in 1941 completed a master class with Georg Kulenkampff . During the Second World War he also studied medicine, mastered the Physikum and did his military service as a field doctor in Italy.

In 1945 he became the first concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and remained in this position until his retirement in 1981. In addition to his work in the orchestra, Erich Keller was involved in chamber music and was part of various ensembles. Together with his wife, the pianist Elisabeth Schwarz and the cellist Max Braun , he founded the Munich Chamber Trio . In 1945 Erich Keller founded the "Keller Quartet" together with Karl Schindler (2nd violin), Adalbert Huber (viola) and Max Braun (violoncello). And he was part of the "Münchner Nonett" ensemble, which was founded in 1960. Composers such as Harald Genzmer , Werner Egk , Günter Bialas or Berthold Hummel composed works especially for this formation. In 1950 Erich Keller founded the Convivium Musicum chamber orchestra . In addition to his performances, Erich Keller also taught at the conservatory in Augsburg and at the music academy in Munich.

Erich Keller died on September 8, 2010.
