Erich Kettenhofen

Erich Kettenhofen (born June 6, 1946 in Schwemlingen ) is a German ancient historian .

Kettenhofen first studied theology at the Trier Theological Faculty and at the University of Bonn and graduated in 1971 with a diploma (thesis with Johannes Botterweck on Jeremiah 2 ). He then began studying history at the universities of Bonn, Saarbrücken and Trier. After the first state examination in 1973, he was in 1977 with the thesis about the Syrian Augustae , so the Roman empresses from the house of Severus , PhD . From 1977 to 1982 he worked on the Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East in the Ancient History section as a research assistant. In Trier he completed his habilitation in 1991 with a thesis on the history of Armenia in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. In 1997 he was appointed adjunct professor of ancient history. He retired in 2011.

The main research areas of Kettenhofen are the Roman history of the third century AD, the history of Iran in pre-Islamic times, the history of Armenia and the historical geography of the Near East. He is co-author of the Encyclopædia Iranica and regularly writes reviews for specialist organs, including H-Soz-u-Kult . Kettenhofen is considered to be one of the best German connoisseurs of the late ancient Middle East.
