Johannes Botterweck

Gerhard Johannes Botterweck (born April 25, 1917 in Rheydt ; † April 15, 1981 in Bonn ) was a German theologian , Old Testament scholar and dean of the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Live and act

Botterweck studied philosophy , catholic theology and oriental studies in Frankfurt am Main and Vienna . In 1944 he received his doctorate in Vienna. phil. and was ordained a priest that same year. As a military chaplain on the Eastern Front , he lost a leg in World War II . He was a chaplain and religion teacher in Viersen ( Diocese of Aachen ). In 1950 the doctorate to Dr. theol. and in 1953 the habilitation in Bonn. From 1953 to 1959 he was professor of the Old Testament in Tübingen , from 1960 to 1981 in Bonn. His academic focus was on the semantics and philology of biblical languages, the social criticism of the prophets and the theology of the psalms .

The students of Botterweck include Heinz-Josef Fabry , Manfred Görg , Erich Kettenhofen , Josef Plöger and Franz Josef Stendebach .
