Franz Josef Stendebach (born December 24, 1934 in Bad Godesberg ) is a German theologian and Old Testament scholar. He is professor emeritus for the Old Testament at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and was director of the German Catholic Biblical Works from 1971 to 1979 and chairman of the executive committee of the Catholic Biblical Federation, then the World Catholic Federation for the Biblical Apostolate (WCFBA) was called.

Life

After childhood in Bad Godesberg, Stendebach attended the humanistic grammar school of the Aloisiuskolleg as an external student from 1945 to 1952 and became a member of the Bund New Germany . In 1954 he graduated from high school and joined the Order of the Oblates (OMI) . On May 1, 1958, he made his religious vows (perpetual profession). Theology studies took place at the order's own Philosophical-Theological University in the Bonifatius Monastery in Hünfeld near Fulda . This college was closed in 1971. After completing his studies, Stendebach was ordained a priest in 1961 and then released from the order to study the Old Testament in more depth. He did his doctorate with Gerhard Johannes Botterweck and took part in Martin Noth's advanced seminar. He completed his dissertation on "Theological Anthropology of the Yahwist" in 1970 at the University of Bonn . On March 1, 1971, he took over the position of director of the Catholic Biblical Works in Stuttgart as the successor to Otto Knoch . In 1972 he was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the World Catholic Federation for the Biblical Apostolate (WCFBA), which in 1990 was renamed "Catholic Biblical Federation". In 1982 Stendebach left the executive committee due to internal disputes. Since the Order of the Oblates (OMI) needed Stendebach as an exegetical expert for its publication work, the Old Testament scholar ended his work at the Catholic Biblical Works and began working in the editing of the workbook for liturgy and sermon, "God's Word in the Church Year", which continues to this day. At the same time, he took up extensive lecturing activities in all areas of the German-speaking area and took on regular teaching assignments at the University of Frankfurt am Main (today: Catholic Theology, Faculty 07). There he was also appointed honorary professor for the subject of the Old Testament (1982) and retired as such in 2010 after 30 years of teaching. Further teaching assignments also took Stendebach to Darmstadt, Saarbrücken and Vallendar. He lived in the Oblate Monastery in Mainz for 35 years and is now spending the rest of his life in a senior citizens' home with the religious order in Hünfeld.
