Erich Lüddeckens

Erich Gottfried Leberecht Lüddeckens (born June 15, 1913 in Hirschberg im Riesengebirge , † July 1, 2004 ) was a German Egyptologist .

Life

Erich Lüddeckens grew up in Berlin and studied Egyptology, Ancient History, Hebrew Studies, Classical Philology and Archeology there and in Munich. He received his PhD in Egyptology in 1939. After the war he studied Protestant theology and also worked as a pastor for a short time. In 1950 he switched to the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, followed by his habilitation in Egyptology in Mainz in 1953. In 1964 he was appointed professor of Egyptology at the University of Würzburg . He retired in 1981.

His field of work was in particular the demotic and Coptic Egyptian.
