Erich Neuwirth

Erich Neuwirth (born October 17, 1948 in Schleinbach ) is a retired associate professor for statistics and computer science at the University of Vienna .

Life

Neuwirth studied mathematics and statistics at the University of Vienna as part of a study irregular. In 1974 he received his doctorate as Dr. Phil.

He has taught at the University of Vienna since 1969 and received his habilitation there in 1987 in the subjects of statistics and computer didactics. He was first a teacher and researcher at the Institute for Statistics and Decision Support. After a restructuring of the University of Vienna, he became a member of the Faculty of Computer Science and headed the Didactic Center for Computer Science there. In 2010 he retired, but continues to teach at the University of Vienna, the University of Salzburg and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences .

He did research at the National Institute of Multimedia Education in Japan, Northeastern University in Boston and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in South Korea.

The filmmaker Manfred Neuwirth is Erich Neuwirth's brother.

Core areas of his research are voter flow analysis , combinatorics , mathematics and music and the use of spreadsheets in class. Another area of ​​research is the PISA study . When evaluating the study from 2003, he revealed major errors. His corrections were subsequently adopted.

He publishes regularly in his statistical and educational policy blog with articles on education, statistics and politics.

Public activities

Erich Neuwirth participated in the election projections of Prof. Bruckmann on ORF from the early 1970s. In 1983 he worked out the first voter flow analysis that was broadcast on ORF. From 1986 to 1996 (with an interruption in 1994) he carried out the election projections for the ORF. He then oversaw the election projections for the Ministry of the Interior, and since 1997 he has been calculating and presenting the projections from ServusTV .

He also publishes analysis of elections on several websites.

Others

Erich Neuwirth developed the statconn server and RExcel together with Thomas Baier . The statconn server offers the possibility to connect R with MS Excel, Open Office and various programming languages. RExcel is an add-in for Microsoft Excel to use R from Excel.
