Erich Sackmann (born November 26, 1934 in Baiersbronn ) is a German professor emeritus for experimental physics .

Life

Sackmann studied at the University of Stuttgart and received his doctorate there in 1964. After stays at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ, USA and the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, he completed his habilitation in 1974 and was appointed professor at the university in the same year Ulm . In 1980 he followed a call to the physics faculty at the Technical University of Munich .

Sackmann is one of the most important and influential biophysicists in Germany. In the field of cell biophysics, in particular the research of lipid membranes and the mechanics of the cytoskeleton , he presented fundamental work. A neutron reflectometer at the research neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz , in whose development Sackmann played a key role, also serves to examine membranes .

The German Physical Society (DPG) honored Sackmann in 2006 with the award of the Stern-Gerlach Medal , the highest DPG award for experimental physics. The laudatory speech said:

“[...] in recognition of his groundbreaking results in understanding the dynamics of membranes and biopolymer networks, the mechanical properties of membranes and the cell-surface interaction. With this he founded the physics of biosystems. "

In 2001 he received the Wolfgang Ostwald Prize . In 2002 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
