The beautiful bear ( Callimorpha dominula ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae). The beautiful bear was butterfly of the year 2010 .
features
The slender moths reach a wingspan of 45 to 60 millimeters. They have black forewings with yellow or orange and white spots. The hind wings are red or rarely yellow and have black spots.
The caterpillars are about 40 millimeters long and are dark gray with interrupted yellow stripes and small white dots on the sides and have gray and black hair.
Occurrence
They occur all over Europe and Asia and prefer sunny to partially shaded and humid areas such as. B. brook banks, swamp and pond areas and moist forests and forest meadows.
They are very common in places in the southern German mountainous region and in lower altitudes in the Alps . They are rare in northern Germany .
Way of life
The animals are mainly nocturnal, but also fly during the day. They live a generation a year. Similar to the Russian bear , they also visit flowers to suckle nectar.
