Life

After graduating from high school in 1937, Scheibmayr took on a job in the Munich cemetery administration, under which the later senior civil servant was responsible for the operation as well as the maintenance and expansion of the cemeteries for a long time. Scheibmayr gained regional fame in the 1950s through his commitment to the reburial of many fallen war soldiers. After his retirement in 1981, Scheibmayr researched the history of the individual Munich cemeteries as well as famous personalities who were buried there. He published a first résumé in 1984 under the title Last Home - Personalities in Munich Cemeteries . Although the book had only been self-published, it received nationwide attention, so that three more volumes should follow between 1989 and 2002. In 2006, while still alive, Scheibmayr handed over the distribution of his books to MünchenVerlag . In 2008 Scheibmayr was awarded the silver medal “ Munich shines ” for his services to the Munich cemetery system . In the bulletin of the Munich City Hall, the consequences of Scheibmayr's journalistic activity were recognized as follows:

“It is primarily thanks to Erich Scheibmayr that visitors to the cemetery can easily find the graves of important Munich artists, writers or politicians today and that the burial sites have become cultural memorials. "

Scheibmayr died on September 21, 2009 at the age of 90 in his hometown and was buried in the forest cemetery.
