Erich Walther (musician)

Erich Walther (* 1906 in Gornsdorf ; † after 1970) was a German musician. He was one of those personalities in the musical field who noticeably enriched cultural life in the Saxon Ore Mountains .

Life

He came from Gornsdorf in the Erzgebirge, where he successfully completed an apprenticeship as a stocking maker after attending school. Then he took over the parents' furniture business.

As a 10-year-old his musical talent was discovered and known for learning to play the piano. After two years he started playing the clarinet. At the age of 15, Erich Walther joined the Gornsdorf folk choir in the German Workers' Choir. After a short time he took over the post of second choir conductor and performed as a pianist at choir concerts. In addition, when he was 17, Erich Walther took over the direction of the Gornsdorfer Musikverein, from which the wind orchestra of the VEB Kammgarnspinnerei Gornsdorf emerged .

In 1926 Erich Walther also took on the role of conductor of the people's choir in neighboring Meinersdorf. He led this choir until it was banned by the National Socialists in 1933. After the end of the Second World War and his return from captivity, Erich Walther took over this choir again in Meinersdorf, just as he led the re-established people's choir in Gornsdorf from 1946. He gave up the choir in Meinersdorf in 1952, but remained the conductor in Gornsdorf. In 1948 he also took over the position of choirmaster of the municipal choir in the city of Thalheim / Erzgeb. which later became the choir of the "Clara Zetkin" cultural center. In 1961, Erich Walther took over the full-time artistic management of this cultural center after receiving state approval in 1959 to give music lessons. In the same year he founded the string orchestra and the Erzgebirgsgruppe der Kulturhauses in Thalheim, from which u. a. Horst Gläß emerged .

In 1970 Erich Walther retired at the age of 64.
