Erich Zeitler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erich Zeitler (born February 20, 1921 in Roding ; † February 13, 2004 in Nuremberg ) was a Bavarian local politician and member of the SPD's state parliament .

Life

After attending school in Amberg and serving in the war in Russia, during which he was seriously wounded in 1941, Zeitler studied law at the universities of Erlangen and Munich. In 1951 he settled as a lawyer in Ismaning , joined the SPD in 1952 and successfully ran for honorary mayor of the community in the same year. In the state elections in 1962, he was elected for the first time in the Bavarian state parliament for the Munich-Land constituency, with the later mayor of Munich, Georg Kronawitter , acting as Zeitler's personal campaign manager . Zeitler was a member of the state parliament for four electoral terms and did not run again in 1978 because a connection between the now full-time mayor's office and the state parliament mandate was not permitted. Zeitler remained Mayor of Ismaning until the local elections in 1990, when a further candidacy was no longer legally possible for reasons of age. When he left office, he was the longest serving mayor in Bavaria with 38 years of service.

In February 2004 Zeitler died in a Nuremberg hospital from injuries sustained as a passenger in a car accident.

Honors

Zeitler is an honorary citizen of the Ismaning community, and a street in the center of the village was named after him. He was a bearer of the Bavarian Order of Merit and from 1978 the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
