Erich von Rath

Erich von Rath (born June 12, 1881 in Krefeld , † August 31, 1948 in Bonn ) was a German librarian and university professor.

Life

After graduating from high school in Krefeld, Erich von Rath first studied law, political science and history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1900 he became a member of the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg . As an inactive he moved to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . After completing his studies, he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD.

He began his professional career in 1906 as a volunteer at the Royal Library in Berlin . In 1910 he got a job as a librarian there. During the First World War, he took part as a reserve officer on the Eastern and Western Fronts. After being seriously wounded, he retired from military service in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed director of the library of the Imperial Court in Leipzig. In 1921 he was appointed director of the Bonn University Library . The University of Bonn appointed him honorary professor and later university professor.

His scientific work was incunabula research . He was chairman of the commission for the complete catalogs of incandescent prints.
