Erik Meijer (born December 5, 1944 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch politician ( Socialist Partij ).

Life

Erik Meijer completed his university studies in social geography in 1972 and then worked from 1971 to 1975 as a geography teacher. From 1980 to 1992 he was employed as an administrative officer for the city of Rotterdam .

In addition to his professional and political work, he was a board member of the Citizenship Foundation from 1990 to 1993, from 1995 to 1998 as chairman of the residents' association Spangen (Rotterdam) and from 1995 to 1999 as chairman of the foundation “Ontwikkelbank Centrum” (Rotterdam).

Erik Meijer began his political career from 1961 to 1969 as a member of the main board of the socialist youth and student associations. He joined the Pacifist Socialist Party in 1968, where he held the deputy chairmanship and chairmanship of the People's Representative Section until 1991. He was also active as an editor of the party newspaper. From 1975 to 1978 he was a member of the Amsterdam City Council for his party. He held other mandates as a member of the Delfshaven district council from 1998 to 2002 and as a member of the provincial states of South Holland from 1982 to 1995.

At the beginning of the 1990s he joined the GroenLinks party . There he was a member of the party executive committee and deputy chairman of the party from 1992 to 1995. Since 1999 he has been a board member of the Socialist Party of the Netherlands .

He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999 and is one of two Dutch politicians in the Confederal Group of the European United Left . In Parliament, he sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and is a member of the delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Europe .
