Jean-Paul de Jong (born October 17, 1970 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch football player and current coach .
Player career
In his youth de Jong was active for some youth teams. Among other things for the Dutch top club Feyenoord Rotterdam and Ajax Amsterdam . The midfielder found his way to Germany via Arminia Bielefeld . There he played in his first year as a professional for the then second division club VfL Osnabrück . He came on fourteen missions, but was mostly only a change player. The then young player made his debut on matchday 3, July 19, 1992, against FC Remscheid . After the team was determined to be relegated at the end of the 1992/93 season, de Jong moved back to his home club FC Utrecht in the Netherlands. In the following fourteen years, de Jong developed into one of the team's greatest performers and was instrumental in their annual performance. Between 2002 and 2004 the FCU reached the final of the KNVB Cup three times in a row . After the first final was lost, they secured the Cup in 2003 and 2004. In the summer of 2004, the win in the game for the Johan Cruyff Schaal was added. This made FC Utrecht the first club, alongside the three big ones (Ajax Amsterdam, Feyenoord Rotterdam, PSV Eindhoven ), to secure this trophy. Due to his association with the club, de Jong was a crowd favorite and identification figure for the FCU supporters. In 2006 the fans honored him with the David di Tommaso trophy , the trophy for the best player of the season. He was voted second in 2004 and third again in 2007.
After 370 games, de Jong ended his active professional career at the end of the 2007/08 season. This makes him the player with the second most league appearances for FC Utrecht. With his 83rd yellow card received on April 22, 2007 , he replaced Barry van Galen as the record holder for yellow cards. A week later, on April 29, 2007, the midfielder had his last competitive appearance in the FCU jersey .
