Erik Rhodes (born February 10, 1906 in El Reno , Oklahoma as Ernest Sharpe , † February 17, 1990 in Oklahoma City ) was an American actor .

life and career

Erik Rhodes was born on El Reno, an Indian reservation in Oklahoma, under the name Ernest Sharpe. First and foremost, Rhodes was a musical performer on Broadway , but the modern viewer mainly enjoyed his film appearances as a comical Italian alongside Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the dance films Tanz mit mir! (1934) and I dance myself into your heart (1935) is known. He has been on Broadway stages since 1928 and has already played in the theater version of Tanz mit mir! . The film adaptation of the musical brought him to Hollywood in 1934. However, he only starred in a little over 20 films until 1939, when he returned to the theater boards. Back in New York City during World War II he was socially engaged. From 1947 to 1964 he played again in musicals on Broadway. His greatest stage successes were pieces like Can-Can and Toll drove the ancient Romans .

As a young man, Rhodes had a relationship with the bon vivant Nicolas de Gunzburg . In 1972, Rhodes married Emala Dunbar (1899-1984) for the first time. The couple lived in New York until the early 1980s. Rhodes died of pneumonia in 1990 at the age of 84. He is buried next to his wife in El Reno Cemetery, Oklahoma.
