Erika Hubatschek (born October 5, 1917 in Klagenfurt , † May 19, 2010 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian photographer, geographer and folklorist . Her interest was primarily directed towards the life of Austrian mountain farmers, which she described and documented in numerous books.

Life

Erika Hubatschek was the daughter of a Protestant pastor in Klagenfurt and grew up in Bruck an der Mur . Originally she wanted to study at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna , but since she did not descend directly from a farm with her own land, she rejected this plan again. After studying geography, sports and folklore in Graz and from 1937 in Innsbruck, she did her doctorate in 1940 on the subject of alpine pastures and mountain meadows in the upper Lungau ; the work was not printed until 1950. From 1940 to 1978 she worked as a high school teacher in Innsbruck. Her great interest was in the life and work of the mountain farmers, which she documented photographically for over 60 years. For a long time she worked with a Kodak Retina , later with a Leica - all flash photos were taken with magnesium light . Since 1949 she has given international lectures and since 1992 she has been represented in photo exhibitions around the world, including an exhibition in the Alpine Museum in Munich in 2001 .
