Erika Thümmel
Erika Thümmel (born November 25, 1959 in Graz ) is an Austrian artist, exhibition designer and restorer .
Life
Erika Thümmel was born as the fourth and last daughter of Johannes and Theodora Thümmel. After graduating from high school in Graz, she did her diploma as a restorer at the “ Opificio delle Pietre Dure ” in Florence (diploma thesis on wood reinforcement). Studies in architecture and art history that began afterwards were not completed because of her professional commitment. She worked in the workshops of the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna, then in Italy in the Soprindendenza di Matera and then in Friz Mang's studio in New York City , until she set up her own studio in Graz in 1983, where she created private, museum and church works of art restored.
She designed furniture with the character of an object as so-called living objects and house beings and realized numerous artistic installations and objects. She also designed and organized numerous cultural and art-historical exhibitions around the world. Since 2001 she has been a lecturer on the information design course, and since 2004 she has been a full-time teacher in the master's "exhibition design" at the FH Joanneum in Graz.
The Atelier Thümmel moved to the centrally located old town house Jakoministraße 9, which was built in 1786 and which was renovated by Thümmel as client and co-designer in the period 2009-2011 and received a red, artistic facade design by Michael Fanta.
Work
Erika Thümmel works as an artist in many areas. She has not only created "living subjects" or "house beings", but has also focused on feminism in connection with art and realized works on the subject of transience. She works with very different materials, from women's hair to chocolate and traditional painting . So is z. B. the series of well-known Graz feminists emerged. For these works she used oil paint to paint almost photo-realistic portraits of women on durable Doka panels. The exhibitions she designed include the “Mountain of Memories”, “Modernism in Dark Times” and the towers of the Mariazell Basilica.
