Eriosyce aerocarpa is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet aerocarpa means' (Greek) aer = air, wind, carpos = fruit; the prickly fruits are blown away by the wind '.

description

Eriosyce aerocarpa grows with spherical to elongated shoots and reaches a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The root is a large conical tap root . There are numerous ribs that are divided into cusps . The needle-like, straight to slightly curved thorns are reddish orange to gray. The up to two thick, protruding central spines, which can also be missing, are up to 1 centimeter long. The six to 14, somewhat comb-shaped arranged radial spines are 2 to 3 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are light reddish with a darker central stripe. They appear from young areoles and have a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. The elongated fruits open with a basal pore.

Distribution and systematics

Eriosyce aerocarpa is widespread in the Chilean region of Atacama near Huasco in coastal areas. It was first described as Chileorebutia aerocarpa in 1959 by Friedrich Ritter . Fred Kattermann placed them in the genus Eriosyce in 1994 .
