Eriovixia gryffindori is a true orb web spider from the genus Eriovixia .

description

The spider species has been described using a single female, the male is unknown. No further finds are known so far.

The spider reaches a body length of about 7 millimeters and a prosomal length of 1.8 millimeters. As with all species of the genus, the carapace is densely tomentose and the abdomen is triangularly pointed. In the species it is elongated, longer than wide and curved downwards towards the tip. It is gray-brown in color, with a broad, dark brown central band and eight indistinct brown, green-lined pairs of spots. The prosoma is colored orange-brown. the entire body is covered by double hairs made up of thin white and somewhat shorter, yellowish hairs. The shape of the epigyne must be compared in order to distinguish reliably from similar species . The shape and color of the spider resembles a dry leaf.

Its appearance reminded the first writer of the Sorting Hat of the wizard Godric Gryffindor , as depicted in the film adaptation of the Harry Potter novels. In addition, according to their own statements, they wanted to promote the public perception of spiders with the name.

Location

The spider was discovered in the Western Ghats in the Shimoga district of India . The site was found in the forest islands known locally as "Kans", made of evergreen trees that are interspersed in the deciduous forest there.

Nothing is known about the biology of the species. Other species of the genus are known to have vertically oriented wheel nets on trees and bushes, they are nocturnal.

reception

The species was discovered by the hobby researchers Javed Ahmed, Rajashree Khalp and JN Sumukha from Mumbai and because of the naming, as intended by the first descriptors, received wide attention.

Systematics

The genus Eriovixa currently comprises 23 species, it is known in a large distribution area in the tropics of Asia and Africa, from West Africa to China and the Philippines. In addition to the species described here, Eriovixia excelsa (Simon, 1889), Eriovixia laglaizei (Simon, 1877), Eriovixia palawanensis (Barrion & Litsinger, 1995), Eriovixia poonaensis (Tikader & Bal, 1981) and Eriovixia kachugaonensis Basumatary et al . Proven in 2019.
