erlassjahr.de - Development needs debt relief is an alliance that campaigns for debt relief for debtor countries . Its seat is in Düsseldorf.

Since the 1990s, more and more development policy initiatives and non-governmental organizations have been committed to extensive debt relief for highly indebted developing countries . In 1997, church initiatives in particular formed a coalition which , at the beginning of the new millennium , took the biblically required debt relief (see Jubilee year ) with the campaign " Jubilee 2000 ", in which Ann Pettifor was heavily involved The situation of the poorest countries in the world. Supporters were Pope John Paul II and the World Council of Churches . The alliance also called for a fundamental reform of international insolvency proceedings between debtor countries and their creditors, based on the London Debt Conference of 1953.

At the 25th G8 summit in Cologne in 1999, over 40,000 citizens from Europe demonstrated with a human chain for these demands; Celebrities such as Bono , Bob Geldof , Thom Yorke and others gave the summit host, then German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , almost 20 million signatures for it. Thereupon the G8 decided on the so-called HIPC initiative for highly indebted countries, but no reform of the bankruptcy law.

Thereupon more than 2000 co-sponsoring organizations decided to continue the campaign under the new title “erlassjahr.de - Development needs debt relief”. They are calling for so-called odious debts to be canceled, for fair, transparent arbitration proceedings to be introduced and for the procedure previously determined by the creditors to be replaced. They also want to monitor and critically monitor the implementation of international debt relief initiatives (mainly the HIPC and MDRI initiatives).

So far, 850 German-speaking organizations have joined this campaign, including regional churches , dioceses , one-world groups, parishes , world shops and organizations from development cooperation such as Kindernothilfe , Germanwatch and World Vision Germany . Your alliance is part of a global network of over 50 similar campaigns and alliances.

Erlassjahr.de has with numerous publicity campaigns, u. a. with a "cooking pot demo" at the Ecumenical Church Congress 2003 in Berlin, with "fairness rings" (until 2004) and with a balloon campaign for the G8 summit in Heiligendamm (2007), on the situation of over-indebted countries and the inadequate solutions by the Paris Club as well brought the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to the attention and suggested their own solutions.
