Adventure library
The Erlebnis-Bücherei was a German booklet series that appeared from 1940 to 1944 in 105 editions together with the War Library of German Youth and the Colonial Library in the NSDAP- owned Steiniger Publishing House in Berlin . In contrast to these ranks, it was not supported by the Wehrmacht , but was also used for military propaganda . Like this, it appeared in medium format and comprised 32 pages. The notebooks had colored covers and black and white drawings inside. The price was 20 pfennigs .
Topics and authors
The series was thematically broad. According to Galle, a good 30% of the booklets can be assigned to scientific topics, mostly in the form of expedition reports e.g. B. from Vasco da Gama ( caravels sail to India ), Alfred Wegener ( Wegener from station Eismitte ) or Sven Hedin ( with Sven Hedin through the Gobi ).
Another 30% deal with historical events such as B. the Spanish conquest of Latin America ( In the temple city of the Mayas , Captain Federmann fights in Venezuela , Landsknecht of the Emperor on La Plata ), the Boer War ( scout for Ohm Krüger ), the Boxer uprising ( The black days of Beijing , "Iltis" defeats the Taku forts ) or uprisings in the German or British colonies ( three lieutenants of Francois , revolt in India ).
Some volumes also deal with topics from German naval history , e.g. B. The Admiral of the Hanseatic League via Berend Jacobsen Karpfanger , The first submarine in the world via Wilhelm Bauer or Paul Beneke ( The Ship's Captain of Danzig ).
A good 40% of the booklets are pure adventure stories e.g. B. from the area of piracy ( among river pirates on the Jang-Tse , pirate fishing in the Atlantic ). They are practically exclusively located on non-European locations.
Authors such as Gino von Moellwitz, Kurt Riedel, Oskar H. Breucker (here under the pseudonym Ralph Garby), Paul O. Erttmann and Heinz Oskar Wuttig were veterans of the adventure genre and also wrote for the colonial library .
Advertisement for the Kriegsmarine
In issue 19 of Fritz Carl Roegel's "Iltis" defeats the Taku forts , on page 32 there is an advertisement for the Kriegsmarine , in which there is a reference to a planned activity of the Kriegsmarine in future colonies:
The Greater German Freedom Struggle will secure our people the legitimate claim to overseas colonial property for all time. After the victorious end of this struggle, the German navy will have worldwide and responsible tasks in establishing and securing the new German colonial empire . German men from all regions of the empire will sail the oceans again on proud warships and give our people the status they deserve in the world. If you, German boy, want to take part in this beautiful task, if you want to widen your eyes and get to know the beauties of foreign countries and continents with your own eyes, come to the Navy. Receipt of reports: For officer candidates the inspection of the education system of the Navy (recruitment department Kiel) and for the team careers the military district command responsible for the applicant's place of residence.
reception
Although the series probably found widespread circulation, including antiquarian products after 1945 , there is still a lack of scientific analyzes of its reception .
