Life

Stumbling block for Erna Behling at Löwenstrasse 5 in Hamburg-Hoheluft-Ost .

Erna Behling was born in Hamburg on October 5, 1884. In the nursing historical research no information is known about her childhood and youth, but an undated photograph of Erna Behling exists in the costume of the Red Cross . This suggests that she spent part of her professional life as a Red Cross nurse .

Despite investigations by Hanna Elling and Hilde Steppe in connection with nursing under National Socialism , the date Erna Behling joined the Communist Party of Germany is not known, but it is certain that she was involved in the Hamburg uprising on October 23, 1923. Her nickname Red Nurse comes from this time .

In 1939 she married Friedrich Behling, who was also active in the resistance. She belonged to the Bästlein-Jacob-Abshagen resistance group . Towards the end of 1944, the Behlings were denounced . Erna Behling was by the Gestapo in protective custody and taken to the detention center Fuhlsbüttel spent. In April 1945, Erna Behling was transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp together with 12 other women and 58 resistance men on the instructions of Count von Bassewitz-Behr . There she was hanged without a death sentence on the night of April 22, 1945 .

Commemoration

In memory of Erna Behling, the Erna-Behling-Kehre, a street in Hamburg-Neuallermöhe , was named after her. A stumbling block at Löwenstrasse 5 ( Falkenried-Terrassen - residence) in Hamburg-Hoheluft-Ost also reminds of the resistance fighter.
