After attending school and graduating from business school, she passed an exam as a welfare worker. She worked in her profession and went to Vienna for three years in 1923 . She then worked again in Berlin until she was released by the National Socialists in 1933. During the time of National Socialism , she was involved in the resistance and worked as a secretary.

After the end of the Second World War, she took on functions in the education office and youth welfare office of the Senate Administration. From 1946 to 1948 she headed the main youth welfare office, at times as a member of the magistrates Ostrowski , Reuter and Schroeder , and was also a city councilor in 1946/47. On her initiative in 1948, the "Institute for Psychotherapy eV Berlin" developed a course for psychagogues who, after completing their training, were to take on the educational and curative / socio-educational care of orphaned and fatherless war children. Just five years later, an association of Berlin psychagogues was founded, which was in lively contact with colleagues at other West German training institutions (e.g. in Hanover, Heidelberg and Stuttgart). With her highly acclaimed contribution “Casework and Supervision in American Child Welfare”, Maraun pointed the way for the development of supervision in Germany.

Erna Mauran is buried in the Kreuz cemetery in Berlin-Lankwitz . Her grave was an honorary grave of the city of Berlin from 1962 to 2011 .
