Ernest A. Janson

Ernest August Janson (born August 17, 1878 in New York City , USA ; died May 14, 1930 on Long Island , USA) was a veteran in the United States Marine Corps . During his service, he was awarded the Medal of Honor twice. He is one of only 19 people who have received this award twice. He served in the First World War under the name of Charles F. Hoffman .

Life

Ernest A. Janson was born on August 17, 1878 in New York City. After serving 10 years in the United States Army , he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) on June 14, 1910 . Before World War I he served on the USS Nebraska (BB-14) and the USS Montana (ACR-13), among others .

On June 14, 1917, his unit was sent to France as part of the first US troops on board the USS DeKalb to take part in the hostilities of the First World War.

In the course of the German spring offensive in 1918 , his unit was involved in heavy fighting on June 6, 1918 near Château-Thierry . The unit was in the process of taking Ridge Hill 142 when Ernest Janson watched twelve enemy soldiers attempting to adopt a superior firing position. He single-handedly attacked the soldiers with the bayonet , was able to kill two of them and drive the rest to flight, although he was badly wounded himself. He was also able to capture five light machine guns. For his selfless work to protect the lives of his comrades, he was awarded the Medal of Honor of the US Army and the Medal of Honor of the US Navy . He has also received various other honors for this (including: Médaille militaire , Croix de guerre , Cruz de Guerra (Portugal), Croce di Guerra (Italy)).

Ernest A. Janson finally left the USMC on September 30, 1926 with the rank of sergeant major and entered his retirement. After a brief illness, he died on May 14, 1930. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn , New York City .
