Ernest Callot
Félix Ernest Callot (born April 9, 1840 in La Rochelle , † December 29, 1912 in Paris ) founding member of the International Olympic Committee (1894–1912) and sports official in a large number of French sports clubs and associations.
Life
Callot received a classical education and had a reputation as a translator for Greek and Latin . He translated u. a. the seven tragedies of Sophocles . He was the director (1870–1883) of the Société des archives historiques de la Saintonge et de l'Aunis on the French Atlantic coast, before becoming a ministerial official, and a member of the prestigious Association française pour l'avancement des sciences . He was chairman of the gymnastics club of La Rochelle ( La Rochellèse ), president of the French gymnastics federation '' Union des Sociétés de Gymnastique de France '' (1879-1880), member of the committee for the revitalization of physical exercise (1888) and treasurer of the sports association Union des sociétés françaises de sports athlétiques . Pierre de Coubertin decidedly rejected (German) gymnastics because of his drills and the methodology that was not aimed at individual top performance. Since Callot had decided against gymnastics and for competitive sport in the USFSA after a short time as association president, this corresponded to Coubertin's ideas. In his capacity as ministerial official, he helped Coubertin pave the way into sport, helped organize the founding congress of the IOC (for which he had composed an ode for which he read), and brought Dimitrios Vikelas to the Greek , whom he in his capacity as translator knew into the IOC and convinced him to become the first IOC president, with Coubertin as general secretary and himself as treasurer (1894-1908).
