Ernest Dainty

Ernest Herbert Dainty [ ˈdɛɪnti ] (born September 30, 1891 in London , † October 30, 1947 in Toronto ) was a Canadian pianist , organist, composer and conductor.

Dainty came to Toronto at the age of ten and studied piano with Frederick Herbert Torrington at the College of Music there . At the age of twelve he toured Canada as a pianist. From 1907 to 1911 he continued his training with Jaroslaw de Zielinski in Buffalo , then he studied violin, piano with Peter C. Kennedy and harmony with Luigi von Kunits at the Canada Academy of Music . From 1912 to 1914 he was a student of Leopold Godowsky in Vienna.

He was a soldier in World War I and then gave piano and organ concerts on Canadian radio, where he earned a special reputation as a Chopin interpreter. He worked as a chamber musician and conducted the Canadian General Electric Orchestra of the CBC .

In 1929 he founded the Toronto Hebrew Male Chorus , and he also worked as a cantor at various churches in the city. As a composer Dainty emerged mainly with piano and violin works, as well as works for string trio and orchestra. The song Carry On from his score for Carry On Sergeant (1928) became popular during the Second World War.
