Hermann Leberecht Ohl (born October 26, 1806 in Breslau , † October 28, 1885 in Neustrelitz ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman, court preacher at the court of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and superintendent in Neustrelitz.

Life

Ohl was a son of the Catholic part- grocer Carl August Ohl († 1825) and his Protestant wife Christine Dorothea, geb. Gerloff († 1835). He attended the Elisabet-Gymnasium , where he became an enthusiastic supporter of the then still young gymnastics . Under the direction of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , he took part in a gymnastics tour in the Giant Mountains and hiked with friends to Dresden . He began studying Protestant theology at the University of Breslau at Easter 1825 and moved to the University of Berlin the following year . Friedrich Schleiermacher became his theological teacher in Berlin , and Ohl was a tutor for one of Schleiermacher's sons. After his exams, he made several long trips.

In 1831 he came to Neustrelitz as an assistant preacher. He soon won the trust of the grand ducal house, taught Princess Luise (1818–1842) in 1833 and taught and confirmed the other grand ducal children: the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm (1819–1904), Duchess Caroline (1821–1876) and Duke Georg (1824) -1876). In 1841 he was appointed to the preposition in Stargard . Three years later, in October 1844, he returned to Neustrelitz as city preacher and consistorial councilor. In 1848 he was appointed court preacher and superintendent of the Land of Stargard. On his 25th anniversary in office, the Theological Faculty of Rostock University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1856 . On his 50th anniversary in office in 1881 he was appointed Oberhofprediger and consistorial president.

The most important achievements of his tenure included the introduction of a new hymn book and a new state catechism , the regional edition of Martin Luther's Small Catechism used in all schools in Mecklenburg-Strelitz . The construction and inauguration of the Neustrelitz Castle Church also fell during his term of office .

Since May 25, 1832 he was married to Wilhelmine, b. Gerling (born January 15, 1810 - † June 10, 1886), a pastor's daughter from Ballwitz . The couple had two sons and two daughters: Hermann , cathedral provost in Ratzeburg; Anna, who married the chamber secretary Hofrat Paul Horn in Neustrelitz in 1864 and became the mother of Ohl's second successor, Karl Horn ; Robert, who was a merchant in Dresden; and Marie, who married theology professor Theodor Zahn in 1871 .
