Ernest Hoepffner

Ernest Hoepffner (born November 14, 1879 in Rountzenheim , † October 16, 1956 in Strasbourg ) was a French Romanist .

life and work

Hoepffner, who came from a Protestant pastor family, studied from 1897 in Strasbourg, Florence and Paris. He did his doctorate in 1903 under Gustav Gröber on Eustache Deschamps . Life and Works (Strasbourg 1904, Geneva 1974) and completed his habilitation in 1906 through Guillaume de Machaut . Until 1911 he was a private lecturer in Old French and Old Provençal in Strasbourg. From 1911 to 1918 Hoepffner taught as the successor to Leo Wiese in Jena and during this time (from 1912 to 1919) he was also the editor of the magazine for Romance philology , which he took over from his deceased teacher. From 1919 to 1948 he then held the chair for Romance Philology in Strasbourg and experienced the exodus to Clermont-Ferrand, as well as the raid there in November 1943, which took him to the Gestapo prison for a few days. Hoepffner was editor of the magazine Romania and from 1939 an external member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He was an officer in the Legion of Honor. A lecture hall of the Strasbourg Center de philologie et de littératures romanes bears his name. Hoepffner was Paul Imbs's teacher .
