Ernest Hofstetter

Ernest Hofstetter (born August 14, 1911 in Davos ; † June 1, 2007 near Argentière , France ) was a Swiss mountaineer .

Hofstetter explored a route to Mount Everest in 1952 as part of a Swiss expedition , but had to turn back shortly before the summit. The following year, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to climb the mountain using the Hofstetter route. Hillary thanked Hofstetter with a telegram that read: To you goes half the glory (you deserve half of the glory). The route is still used today.

Hofstetter died at the age of 95, leaving behind three children and a granddaughter.
