Ernesto De Pascale

Carmine Ernesto De Pascale (born February 13, 1958 in Florence , † February 13, 2011 in Montevarchi ) was an Italian music journalist, radio presenter, independent music producer and rock musician.

Life

De Pascale went to the Liceo Classico Dante Alighieri (Humanistic Gymnasium) in Florence from 1971 until he was expelled from school for damage to property. He founded his first rock band as a teenager.

In 1980 he started as a disc jockey with the national radio station RAI . In 1981 his alternative country rock band Lightshine, founded in 1976, released their first album. At the age of 25, he founded the rhythm and blues- oriented new wave rock band HypnoDance in 1983 , which existed until 1990 and released several albums and was reunited from 2003 to 2005.

From 1982 to 1995 he was one of the editors and presenters of the popular Italian music radio program Rai StereoNotte , a six-hour nightly commercial-free program ranging from jazz to rock music. In 1983 he co-founded the "Independent Music Meeting", an organizational association of independent indie producers and bands. In 1984 and 1985 he was involved in building the first Italian music- only television channel, Videomusic . As a music journalist he wrote for the daily newspaper La Nazione , the magazines Rolling Stone , Jam , Musica Jazz , Viva Verdi , Il Blues , Doc Toscana as well as for the British journals Record Collector and Rocksbackpages .

In 1990 he became a consultant for Polygram Publishing, Sugar Music and Best Sound Records. His first book, Bessie's Blues , a Bessie Smith biography, he published in 1992. With the nighttime show Effetto Notte , he started working for the largest independent radio station Italia Radio in 1994 . From 1995 he worked for Controradio Florence and made the popular radio show Il Popolo del Blues . In 1995 he published the music history CD box This Is My Story - Il Nuovo Blues in Italia for Sony Music . In the same year he hosted a series on contemporary blues for the state-run RAI. The following year he became music director of the Massa Marittima Folk Blues Festival.

Since 1981 De Pascale has produced more than 40 albums. He discovered and promoted the Italian hip-hop band Articolo 31 . In 1995 he founded the independent record label Il Popolo del Blues . Three years later he expanded it to include the monthly online magazine of the same name.

From 1995 he was a member of the jury of the «Premio Ciampi» of the city of Livorno , an annual national competition for Italian-speaking songwriters.

After various music albums as a band leader, he published a solo album for the first time in 2007 with Morning Manic Music , followed in 2008 by My Land Is Your Land in a duo with British folk rock bassist Ashley Hutchings . The album Seven songs while the city is sleeping was released posthumously in 2014 .

De Pascale died on his 53rd birthday in Montevarchi Hospital, where he was recovering from a recent stroke . He left a wife, Laura Mauric.

The amphitheater in Florence's Cascine Park (Parco delle Cascine) was named in March 2015 in honor of the city's famous son Ernesto De Pascale amphitheater .
