renovation

The word renewal is used synonymously for a variety of issues. Depending on what it refers to, it has different meanings.

Renewal as change

In this sense, “renewal” is applied to objects . The existence of a reference system is assumed. This does not have to be explicitly named, it is sufficient if it is implicitly recognizable (it from the context of meaning). Without a reference system, the occurrence or other behavior of objects cannot be described as “renewal”.

The elementary statement is the exchange or exchange of objects within the frame of reference for new ones , regardless of the possible meanings of the word "new". The reference system can only be vaguely defined or abstract. For example, renewing a pencil means that it is no longer used and a new one is used in its place. In contrast, the appearance of a new pencil without the moment of replacement, i.e. without the reference, would not be called a renewal.

However, the application of the word “renewal” to such individual, simple objects usually appears artificial. The term is more common when several objects are considered that are systematically or functionally related to each other and are therefore part of a whole that takes on the role of the reference system (e.g. renewal of a car tire ). The act of exchange then always affects the parts. The possible meanings of the word "new" can lead to differentiations in the statement:

Renewal of the heating system can, for. B. mean that the entire system is replaced (reference system is the building), or that only individual parts are replaced ("renewed") (reference system is the system itself). Are the new parts only new valent , but unchanged in the other properties, it is a maintenance or repair . The use of new types of parts, on the other hand, is a characteristic of modernization .

Other special, typical or frequently occurring renewals also have their own names. Of restoration is generally referred to when the state was perceived as already considerable grievance before renewal. Renovation (from the Latin renovare "renew") includes renovations on and in buildings. Urban renewal and village renewal deal specifically with the structures of these settlement areas or with objects in them.

Renewal as repetition

This meaning relates to states or processes . It is derived from the word “again”, which has the meaning of “again” or “again”, but is originally a participle of the verb “renew”, the noun of which is “renewal”. While “renewal” and “renew” have been actively used up to the present, “renewal” and “renew” have fallen out of use. Some literary references date from the 19th century, e.g. B .:

... but it is just an eternal change, and nature is eternally renewed ... (from the poem "Im Herbst" by HH v. Fallersleben)

As a participle, “again” would be isolated today, and is therefore only used in an attributive or adverbial way. Example: the component was replaced again after just a few days. The anyway incorrect nouning of “again” to “renewal” has a generally stilted (“bureaucratic”) effect, especially in connection with processes. Then one often gives way to the attributive form or on the object, so formulated, for example, instead of renewing the submission of an application rather resubmission or renewal of an application (which also means only that the process is repeated, but not the application is to be changed itself) .

In the context of states, the term seems to fit better, but it can easily lead to paradoxes . The renewal of a form of rule ( restoration ), for example, usually means the opposite of a change to the new.

Renewal as a spiritual movement

This use of the word “renewal” relates to idealistic issues and is widespread in social (e.g. political) and religious contexts. However, it does not have a meaning that goes beyond that mentioned above. This can mean a change by changing principles or values, behaviors, protagonists or structures, e.g. B. in the form of a reform or revolution , personally z. B. as spiritual rebirth . Sometimes the aim is to change through repetition, in the sense of a return to former values or their revival ( renaissance ).
