The renewal of the Prussian-Russian alliance of September 20, 1729 was a state treaty concluded between Prussia and Russia and was based on the provisions of the defensive alliance concluded three years earlier. The renewed treaty was intended to ensure good relations between the two states after the death of the Russian Empress Catherine in 1727.

Historical background

After the death of Empress Katharina in 1727, Vienna sent the suggestion to Prussia to join the Russian-Austrian alliance. However, Berlin preferred to renew the alliance it had concluded with Russia in August 1726 .

Content of the contract

On July 26, 1729, the draft of the renewed alliance treaty was sent to Gustav von Mardefeld in St. Petersburg. This contained only minor changes to the initial contract of 1726. The changes concerned the statements on Poland-Lithuania at the express request of the Viennese court. The signing took place in Moscow on September 20th. When the copies were exchanged, the Russian side raised a formal concern about the wording of the tsarist title in the Prussian copy, which Mardefeld removed with a declaration issued on November 25th.

The main component of this renewed federal treaty is the treaty of August 21, 1726, with the following arrangement:

  • 1) Corps du traité of August 21, 1726; only Article 14 differs from the original in the renewed version.
  • 2) Second secret article, concerning Schleswig .
  • 3) First secret article, concerning Courland , both with minor changes to the text.

Then the renewed contract continues with an updated text version. It follows:

  • 4) Third secret article of the treaty of August 21, 1726, concerning Poland, with a new final sentence.

Then the final clause follows.

Further development

Due to the death of the Russian Emperor Peter II. In 1730, a renewal of the alliance with the new Empress Anna became necessary just one year later.
