Gustav Freiherr von Mardefeld (* 1664 ; † December 6, 1729 in Pomerania ) was a Prussian politician and diplomat .

Life

origin

Mardefeld comes from a reformed family. His father Conrad (around 1610–1688) came from Geldern and was originally called Maesberg . Conrad Maesberg joined Swedish military service in 1628. For his services he was raised to the Swedish nobility as a royal Swedish colonel in a German regiment on January 20, 1646 under the name Marderfelt and on June 9, 1677 as field marshal and lieutenant governor of Pomerania to the Swedish baron . Conrad had several sons, including Axel Arwed von Mardefeld (around 1655–1708), general under Karl XII. (Sweden) , and Gustav.

Career

Mardefeld initially studied in Greifswald and Frankfurt (Oder) , traveled to France and took a position as court squire in Kassel . There he became a Hessian privy councilor and chief steward . In 1711 he entered Prussian service and went on a special mission to the Palatinate court. When choosing the Emperor Charles VI. (HRR) Mardefeld was the third Brandenburg election ambassador.

On December 15, 1712, Mardefeld received the Prussian recognition of his baron status as the royal Prussian chamberlain and chamber president in Magdeburg .

Friedrich Wilhelm I (Prussia) sent him to Saint Petersburg in 1717 as an authorized minister . In Russia he strengthened relations with Prussia as a diplomat and was an important negotiator at the Åland Congress to end the Northern War . In 1720 Mardefeld became a member of the secret budget council and at the same time titular president of the government of the Duchy of Magdeburg . Since 1722 he asked to be recalled from Russia, since his health would have been shattered by the customary "dissolute way of life". However, this request was not granted until 1728. As Gustav von Mardefeld's representative, his nephew Axel von Mardefeld (1691 / 1692–1748) had already arrived in Russia in 1724. In 1728 Axel took over Gustav's business completely.

family

Since 1698 he was married to Dorothea Catharina von Viereck , a daughter of Adam Otto von Viereck (1634-1717). His daughter Sophia Elisabeth von Mardefeld (* October 4, 1704, † January 4, 1728 in Wesel) was married to Lieutenant General Franz Andreas von Borcke . His son Carl Gustav (* 1704) was a Prussian lieutenant colonel.
