Ernest Albert "Ernie" Young (born August 21, 1892 in Sunderland , † December 14, 1962 ibid) was an English football player who was active as a striker in the early 1920s for South Shields FC and Durham City in the Football League .
biography
Young grew up in Sunderland as one of eleven children of blacksmith Robert Young and his wife Elizabeth. In the 1911 census, his profession was given as a clerk.
Young was the top scorer for the reserve team of FC South Shields in the North-Eastern League in the 1919/20 season and scored four goals in ten appearances for the first team that had been included in the Football League Second Division at the start of the season . The fact that he refused to become a professional at the time and was therefore regularly not available for longer trips away for professional reasons prevented further missions.
For the following season, the mostly deployed as a left inner striker moved to Durham City in the North-Eastern League and finished 12th with the team at the end of the season. Nevertheless, the club was added to the newly created Football League Third Division North for the following season . Young scored Durham's first goal in the new league at the start of the season against FC Southport and was not only second best scorer of his team behind Harry Cousins (17 goals) with 13 goals this season , but also regularly attracted attention as a preparer. The 1922/23 season began Young as the new captain of the team, but he managed only five goals in 21 missions during the season. Again he was (behind Tommy Roe (8 goals)) second best goalscorer in Durham City, but the team ended the season in last place in the table. At the end of the season, Young left the club and subsequently played again in the North-Eastern League.
