Ernst-Albert Arndt

Ernst-Albert Walter Wilhelm Arndt (born September 22, 1927 in Rostock ; † February 13, 2014 ) was a German marine biologist .

Life

Ernst-Albert Arndt was born as the son of Walter Arndt and his wife Marie. He made up his Abitur in February 1946 at the large city school in Rostock after his training had been interrupted by the war riots, among other things he had worked as an air force helper. He then began studying biology at the University of Rostock , which he completed in 1951. In that year he became a qualified biologist and began working as a research assistant at the university's zoological institute. After receiving his doctorate in natural sciences in 1954 with his dissertation on histological and microchemical investigations on oogenesis and bipolar differentiation in freshwater teleosts , he was promoted to senior assistant in the following year and, after his habilitation in 1959, worked as a lecturer in zoology. On July 1 of the next year he was also appointed head of the department for special zoology and marine biology, from 1964 he was an associate professor of marine biology . All in all, he did so well that he was offered a position at the University of Kiel in 1966 , which he was not allowed to accept. He changed the department head position in 1968 with the position of head of the department for marine and fishery biology. Also in that year he founded the Baltic Sea Biologists , of which he remained president until 1975. Because of his merits, he was promoted to full professor in 1969. He also served as President of the Baltic Marine Biologists from 1981 to 1985 . He held the department head office until 1990; Between 1977 and 1981 he was director of the Biology Section. In 1992 he resigned his professorship and retired , but continued to teach general, special and marine biology at the university as a substitute professor. Appointed a member of the university senate in 1993, he finally left the university in 1995.
