The Ernst August Canal is a navigable canal in Hamburg - Wilhelmsburg, about 2 km long .

history

The canal was built in 1852-1854 and named after the son of George V of Hanover , Ernst-August (1845-1923).

location

The canal originally branched off directly from the Reiherstieg , since the expansion of the Reiherstieg main dike it has been connected to the Spreehafen via the (new) Ernst-August-Schleuse . The canal connects the Wilhelmsburger Dove Elbe with the Reiherstieg and thus with the Elbe . In the west the canal is about 40 m wide and narrows further east to 20 m.

The channel was for many years the border between Hamburg and Hanover Wilhelmsburg and served initially the Wilhelmsburger farmers to transport their agricultural products on Ewern or barges towed were. In connection with the later created Assmann Canal and Jaffe-Davids Canal, it increasingly opened up the newly established industrial companies.
