history

The publishing house was founded on October 25, 1922 by Ernst Heimeran as a self-publisher . According to the central publishers' index, the publisher has ceased publishing activities since December 31, 1980.

Heimeran, who was not yet of legal age when the publishing house was founded, founded the one-man publishing house primarily to publish his own anecdotal-inspired works and, above all, those of his friend and “companion” Ernst Penzoldt . Penzoldt's first publication The Companion appeared there in the year the publishing house was founded. Just one year later, in 1923, Heimeran started his publishing house, the Tusculum Collection , a collection of ancient authors. With this now almost 100 year old collection, which is continued today by De Gruyter Verlag and has grown to over 200 works, the publisher established fame and reputation.

“As a publisher and as an author, H. was resourceful. He wasn't born a businessman, he started his publishing business through play. But he worked seriously and tirelessly when it came to defending cultural values against political pressure and protecting them from being destroyed by the war. "

- Wilmont Haacke

In addition to the Ernst Heimeran Verlag, there was also the very successful Heimeran Kochbuch Verlag. According to the German National Library, this was part of the Ernst Heimeran publishing house.
