Ernst Jünger Prize for Entomology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ernst Jünger Prize for Entomology of the State of Baden-Württemberg is a scientific award given to scientists who have done outstanding work in the field of entomology . The prize was donated in 1985 by the state of Baden-Württemberg on the occasion of the 90th birthday of the writer Ernst Jünger (born on March 29, 1895) with his consent. On the one hand, the background is that Jünger had made a name for himself in science with his interests in insect science and his well-known collection of beetles. On the other hand, the fact that these activities found their way into his literary works promoted the understanding of the biology of insects among the literary interested public.

The Ernst Jünger Prize for Entomology, endowed with 5,000 euros (previously 10,000 DM), is indivisible. The first prize winner in 1986 was Hans Georg Amsel , and since then the award has been presented every three years.

The origin of the award winners is not limited to Baden-Württemberg. The selection of the winners is made by a selection jury made up of experts and independent in its decision. Until 2010, the award ceremony took place in the castle of Baron von Stauffenberg in Langenenslingen-Wilflingen - that is, in the immediate vicinity of Ernst Jünger's long-term home. Since 2013, the award ceremony has been organized by the State Museum for Natural History in Stuttgart , where the award ceremony also takes place.
