Ernst-Ulrich Schlünder (born September 6, 1929 in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia Province ; † July 2, 2019 in Ettlingen ) was a German engineer for thermal process engineering .

Career

From 1946 to 1949 he did an apprenticeship as a car mechanic. After graduation and journeyman's examination, he attended the state engineering school in Frankfurt / Main from 1949 to 1952, which he graduated as a state-certified engineer. He then worked for the Linde company in Wiesbaden. From 1954 to 1958 he studied mechanical engineering at the TH Darmstadt , graduating as a qualified engineer.

From 1958 to 1962 he was a scientific assistant to Otto Krischer at the "Chair for Heating and Drying Technology" at the TH Darmstadt. In 1962 he became a Dr.-Ing. PhD , the topic of his dissertation was: "About the drying of resting individual drops and falling spray mist". This was followed by further scientific work at Krischer. In 1964 he completed his habilitation at the TH Darmstadt, the subject of his habilitation thesis was: "Heat and mass transfer between flow-through spherical beds and solid surfaces of individual bodies and channels". He received the Venia legendi at the TH Darmstadt and was active in teaching.

As early as 1963, he had been acting head of the “Research Group for Heating and Cooling Technology” at the Max Planck Institute for Flow Research in Göttingen, succeeding the Glaser who was appointed to Stuttgart . From 1964 to 1967 he was the full-time head of the research group that has since been renamed the “Research Group for Thermodynamics, Heat and Mass Transfer”. During this time his teaching license was transferred to the TH Hannover , where he gave lectures in the field of heat transfer .

From 1967 to 1997 he succeeded Emil Kirschbaum as full professor and head of the "Institute for Thermal Process Engineering" at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . In 1997 he retired .

Scientific activity

Ernst-Ulrich Schlünder taught in the field of heat and mass transfer, distillation and evaporation technology, and drying technology.

His extensive research activities dealt in particular with the heat transfer in fluidized beds, when stationary and rearranged beds come into contact with heated surfaces (application in contact drying), in impingement flow (application e.g. in the nozzle drying of textiles or paper, of thin layers) , Superheated steam drying, high-frequency drying, heat transfer during evaporation and condensation , also of multi-component mixtures, heat transfer in tube bundle heat exchangers with baffles. Other subject areas such as the adsorption of gas mixtures and of binary and multiple mixtures on porous particles resulted from the collaboration in the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 62 "Technical and Chemical Process Sciences", which he initiated and was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) . Here the interest was in the basics of gas and water purification. The second Collaborative Research Center in collaboration with colleagues in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering to which the institute belonged, the SFB 250 “Selective Reaction Control on Solid Catalysts”, was based on ideas from Schlünder.

The diverse scientific interests are reflected in the topics of the numerous study and diploma theses supervised by him and his staff as well as the 80 dissertations suggested and supervised by him.

Further fields of activity:

  • Chairman of the editorial committee of the VDI heat atlas, which appears every three years, from the 2nd to the 6th edition.
  • Editor in Chief of the “Heat Exchanger Design Handbook” written by numerous international authors.
  • Editor in Chief of the journal "Chemical Engineering and Processing", which emerged from the journal "Verfahrenstechnik", of which he was editor.
  • Member of the editorial boards of a number of international scientific journals.
  • Visiting professorships at IIT Madras (India), at UC Berkeley (USA), at ENSIC Nancy (France), at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), at the University College of the University of Cambridge (UK)
