Ernst Bahr (historian)

Ernst Karl Bahr (born August 19, 1907 in Kapellenhütte , Karthaus district , West Prussia ; † May 28, 1998 in Marburg ) was a German historian at the Herder Institute in Marburg.

The father Gustav Albert Bahr was a farmer and had a farm, the mother was Hanna Bahr. Ernst Bahr attended elementary school and business school in Gdansk, where he obtained secondary school leaving certificate in 1923. He then worked as a sales representative for a large Danish seed dealer in Gdansk and then for a furniture factory in Vienna. From 1929 he worked for Dr. August Oetker in Oliva.

In 1932 Ernst Bahr passed the Abitur for non-school students in Gdansk and began studying Slavic, German, history and philosophy at the Technical University. In the following year he moved to Warsaw , where he was authorized representative of Dr. August Oetker and was able to continue his studies. In 1934 he ended his professional activity and completed semesters abroad in Marburg and Berlin. In 1936 Bahr received his doctorate from Erich Keyser in Danzig. phil. The following year he worked scientifically for this.

From the end of 1937 Ernst Bahr worked for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Danzig in its archive and library and became editor of the Danziger Wirtschafts-Zeitung . In 1939/40 and since 1942 he was a soldier and in 1945 was taken prisoner by the Americans. From 1946 Bahr worked for the American occupation authorities in Bavaria.

In 1951 Erich Keyser brought him to the new Herder Institute in Marburg, which is dedicated to East Central European historical research. Ernst Bahr became one of the most productive employees and published numerous books, essays and articles in the decades that followed. He became editor and later editor of the 90-volume scientific articles on the history and regional studies of East Central Europe and since 1975 co-editor of the Old Prussian biography . The focus of his work remained the history of West Prussia.

Ernst Bahr was a member of commissions and associations on the history of West Prussia.
