Ernst Custodis

Ernst Custodis (born March 23, 1898 in Düsseldorf ; † August 2, 1990 there ) was a German ophthalmologist and university professor .

Live and act

Born in Düsseldorf, he studied medicine in Münster, Göttingen, Munich, Düsseldorf and Bonn from 1916. In 1924 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. Until 1933 he worked as a doctor in Bremen, Aachen, Tübingen and Düsseldorf. In 1933 he became senior physician at the eye clinic of the Medical Academy in Düsseldorf , in 1939 he became an adjunct professor there, and from 1946 until his retirement in 1967 he was head of the clinic and chair of ophthalmology in Düsseldorf.

Custodis was a pioneer in retinal surgery. In 1949 he was the first to successfully treat retinal detachment with a seal .

In memory of Ernst Custodis, the Retinological Society honors outstanding retinologists with the Custodis Lecture .
