Ernst Erny (born February 15, 1884 in Rothenfluh , † January 1, 1956 in Liestal ) was a Swiss politician .

Life

Erny studied law in Munich , Heidelberg and Basel and received his doctorate. From 1908 to 1916 he was a senior court clerk in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and from 1916 to 1931 president of the higher court. As a free-spirited government councilor from 1931 to 1950, he was responsible for the judiciary, police and church administration. From 1950 to 1956 he was President of the Referral Authority. Erny was a member of the Federal Alcohol Appeals Commission as well as non-profit commissions and associations and the Board of Trustees of Pro Augusta Raurica . He was also president of the League Against Tuberculosis .

During the social and political tensions of the 1920s and 30s, Erny acted as a balancing force - first as President of the Unification Office in the event of impending strikes and lockouts, later as Justice Director . On the question of reunification , he advocated the continued existence of the independent rural canton.
