Ernst Giese (geographer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Giese (born November 7, 1938 in Munich ) is a German geographer. From 1973 to 2007 he was full professor of economic geography at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen .

Work areas

With his work and activities in the 1970s, Ernst Giese made a significant contribution to the development and dissemination of “quantitative geography” in German-speaking countries. Together with Gerhard Bahrenberg , he wrote a standard geography textbook on "Applied Geo-Statistics", now in its fifth edition, in 1975, which was later expanded into a two-volume work by the authors Josef Nipper and Nils Mevenkamp .

A second focus of Ernst Giese's work was Central Asia research , here with the main topics: increasing water scarcity - causes, effects, approaches to solutions - interstate water use conflicts and water management issues in the arid regions of Central Asia ( Uzbekistan , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan , Xinjiang / PR China).

As part of his work on economic geography , Ernst Giese has dealt with issues of location theory, spatial diffusion research, the formation and development of industrial production clusters and, more recently, with the spatial implications of the globalization of the economy.

In the 1980s, Ernst Giese also dealt intensively with questions of university research in the Federal Republic of Germany, with questions of performance measurement and questions of regional-economic effects of scientific universities being the focus of his work. He worked in an advisory capacity for universities and university organizations and was, among other things, the founding commissioner of the State of Hesse for the geographical institutes of the universities of Thuringia (Jena, Erfurt) 1991–1993.

Scientific career

Giese studied mathematics, geography and philosophy in Münster and Munich from 1958 to 1964. He completed his studies in 1964 with the first state examination in philology for the teaching post secondary school in the subjects of mathematics and geography in Münster. A year later he received his doctorate in geography from the University of Münster. He became a research assistant at W. Müller-Wille in Münster (1965 to 1971).

With an agricultural thesis on Soviet Central Asia, Giese completed his habilitation in Münster in 1971 and then became a scientist there. Council and professor appointed. Deputy professorships took him to Freiburg 1971/72 and Cologne 1972/73. In 1973 he was offered the newly created Chair of Economic Geography at the University of Giessen, which he represented until his retirement in 2007.

Giese was co-editor of the "Geographische Zeitschrift" from 1977 to 2001. It is thanks to his initiative that the so-called “Rauischholzhausen Symposium on Economic Geography” has been taking place at regular intervals since 1989. He carried out numerous research trips to Central Asia from 1966 to 2010, especially to Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan as well as to Xinjiang / PR China. He was involved in the founding and steering of the "Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences" (ZAIAG) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from 2000 to 2008.

From 2001 to 2007 Giese was honorary professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Lanzhou, Institute for Environmental and Engineering Sciences in Cold and Arid Areas.

Committee activities

Giese was Gf. Director of the Institute for Geography, Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences and Geography and long-term elected representative of the professors in the Senate of the University of Giessen. He was a member of the board of directors of the Center for Regional Development Research from 1977 to 1988 (gf. Dir. 1982 - 84) and of the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at the University of Gießen 1988 to 2007 (gf. Dir. 1989 - 91) .

From 1991 to 1993 he was a member of the university structure commission of the state of Thuringia and headed the appointment committees for the re-establishment of the geographical institutes at the universities in Jena and Erfurt.
