Ernst Ludwig Hellwag (born September 4, 1790 in Eutin ; † August 1, 1862 there ) was a German administrative lawyer and autograph collector.

Life

Ernst Hellwag was one of the sons of the Eutin court doctor Christoph Friedrich Hellwag . In 1803 he received artistic training in drawing from the Eutin court painter Ludwig Philipp Strack . After attending the scholarly school, today's Johann Heinrich Voss School , in Eutin, he studied law at the University of Tübingen from 1808 , where his older brother was already studying theology. In November 1811 he moved to Heidelberg University , where he frequented Johann Heinrich Voss's house . From 1812 he was initially a lawyer in Eutin and in 1814 received a position as government secretary in the government of the Oldenburg principality of Lübeck in Eutin. In 1820 he was appointed the Oldenburg government assessor, so that he could get married the following year. In 1832 he was promoted to the government council and after the death of his father in 1835 he moved to the house where he was born in Eutin. In 1860 he became a senior councilor and councilor . Hellwag was the Principality's deputy government director and headed its school administration.

Ernst Hellwag was a great collector of autographs and manuscripts. His collection is now in the Eutin State Library .

From his marriage to Maria Amalia Wibel, the daughter of the government director of the Oldenburg region of the Principality of Birkenfeld Ludwig Conrad Leopold Wibel (1768–1833), six children were born. His son Wilhelm Hellwag became a railway engineer. In addition to his own children, he made it possible for Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt to attend the Eutin School of Academics.
