Ernst Herrmann (historian)

Ernst Adolph Herrmann (mostly Ernst Adolf Herrmann ; * March 13th July / March 25th  1812 reg. In Dorpat , Livonia . Russian Empire ; † September 22nd, 1884 in Marburg an der Lahn , German Empire ) was a German historian .

Life

Since 1829 Ernst Herrmann studied Protestant theology in Dorpat. After that he studied history in Berlin from 1834 , among others with Leopold von Ranke . 1837 graduated with a paper on the German Order to the doctor of philosophy. To do this, he traveled back to Dorpat at times.

From 1838 to 1847 he was a teacher of history and geography at an educational institution in Dresden . In 1847 he completed his habilitation and since 1848 was a full professor of history in Jena . From 1849 to 1852 Ernst Herrmann was editor of the Weimar State Newspaper .

In 1854 he became a corresponding member of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Provinces of Russia .

In 1857 he was appointed full professor of history at the University of Marburg , where he founded the historical seminar in 1865, which he headed until 1877.
